NASA ANNOUNCES SM2 FOR 1999-2005 MIATAS

The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) is pleased to announce a new class that will feature the 1999 – 2005 Mazda Miata. This new class is called Spec Miata 2 (SM2) and is very similar to the existing popular Spec Miata (SM) class for 1990 – 1997 models. The SM2 cars must weigh 2400 pounds, run the stock five-speed transmission (no six speeds allowed), and all cars will run on Toyo tires mounted on any 15” x 7” rim weighing at least 13 pounds. There is no restrictor plate required, unlike earlier 1800 cc powered cars running in the SM class, so competitors will be able to run the cars at their full power level.

“There is a need to include these later model Miatas in our program and we think this class is a great way to do this while preserving the parity found in the SM class for the earlier cars,” said Executive Director Jerry Kunzman.

National Chairman, Ryan Flaherty added, “We decided to launch this program now so that it could be included in the new Toyo Tire rebate program, which should add significant value. The Toyo program has now doubled in size from last year, so folks with the later model Miatas can really see a benefit running in SM2 with NASA this year.”

Some drivers are feverishly preparing their cars, as the first points-race weekend is approaching very quickly in a few regions. More information can be found in the rules.
