Richmond, CA 10-19-2003. It is
with great sadness and shock that the National Office of the National
Auto Sport Association reports the loss of American Stockcar Series
(ASC) driver, William Blauvelt, of New Jersey.
Blauvelt was competing in an ASC race at Buttonwillow Raceway Park,
Buttonwillow, California on October 18th, 2003, when his car left
the track entering a turn called the Buttonhook. His car impacted
a dirt embankment on the passenger side. The race was red-flagged
and the emergency crews were dispatched immediately.
A preliminary inspection indicated that all the safety equipment
functioned properly. Medical treatment was started immediately and
Blauvelt was rushed to the hospital where he died soon after arrival.
Authorities determined the cause of death was due to a closed cranial cervical injury with a basal skull fracture.
"This is the first time something like this has happened,
and I am still in shock," said NASA CEO Jerry Kunzman, when
informed of the news. "It is indeed a tragedy, and my deepest
heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends."
Blauvelt was survived by his wife and he was 38 years old. More
information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
