NASA Sanctions Open Track Challenge, presented by Grassroots Motorsports
The Open Track Challenge (OTC) is an endurance-style time trial event that will provide competitors in both street and track-only vehicles the chance to test their skills against some of the best drivers in the nation while visiting some of the finest tracks on the West Coast during a single week. This format is designed to create the premiere Motorsports vacation for the track-time aficionado and provide sponsors with the opportunity to showcase and competition-prove their products at a national level. OTC will be the track equivalent of Top Gun.

The event will begin at Rupert Bragg-Smith’s Spring Mountain Motorsports complex in Pahrump, Nevada May 12, 2002. Following a day of time trials at that facility, the competitors will then travel from venue to venue either in the cars they plan to compete in (Touring classes) or with their competition vehicles in tow (Unlimited classes). The format for the on-track competition itself will be very similar to the style of Formula One qualifying and will allow competitors a great deal of track time to attempt to run their best lap times. The competitors will be separated into run groups based on their potential lap times at each venue. Each run group will then have between two and five 25-minute run sessions scheduled throughout the day during which they have open access to the track. While on track, competitors’ cars will be outfitted with timing transponders that will register all the lap times for that day to their car. Competitors are not required to enter the track at any designated time in their run groups and they may pit at any time. It is completely up to them in how they manage their allotted track time and resources. As soon as they have 3 laps that they are happy with, they are free to leave for the next venue. This means that competitors could leave as early as 10:00am or as late as 7:00 pm. At the end of the day, the competitors’ 3 fastest lap times will be added together and scored for the day against the competition. The event will finish in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 18, 2002 with a party and awards ceremony to be held at a major hotel on the famed Las Vegas Strip.

The event will be run by the staff of Open Track Motorsports, LLC and sanctioned by the National Auto Sport Association. Open Track Motorsports will be providing professional corner worker and safety support, redundant electronic timing systems, and full operational and logistical support for the event and the competitors. Open Track Motorsports has proven expertise in organizing and sanctioning closed-course road racing events as well as open road race events. The Open Track Challenge staff will provide business and other technical support for the event. Potential competitors and sponsors are invited to visit the Open Track Challenge website at www.opentrackchallenge.com for more information.

Grassroots Motorsports is the Open Track Challenge media sponsor for 2002. The February '02 edition will contain an article discussing the event and will feature the OTC as their cover story (including photo) with 5-7 pages of coverage in their September '02 edition of the magazine.
